Host (Mustard Plant 4)

Address

Leftbank, Irwell Square, M3 3AG

'Host' by Hilary Jack comprises a number of discreet bronze sculptures of hybrid wild plants that typically grow in forgotten urban spaces. The project aims to promote the work of the Manchester Homelessness Charter, with each piece telling a hidden story behind our development as a city and a community. 'Mustard Plant 4' represents the Manchester Homelessness Charter.

Although there are many hardworking organisations and individuals dedicated to supporting people who are homeless, homelessness in Manchester is a growing challenge. The Manchester Homelessness Partnership is based on the idea that joining forces gives us a better chance of achieving our vision of a homeless-free future.

In 2015 people who are homeless in the city and organisations working to reduce homelessness were invited to share their experiences, key challenges and concerns. The Homelessness Charter is the co-produced outcome of all these events, workshops, focus groups and conferences, drawing on best practice nationally and internationally. The Charter provides the city with a vision to end homelessness and the co-created values we should subscribe to to do so.

You can view the charter and its various focused action groups, and see if any of them could benefit from your expertise at charter.streetsupport.net

'Mustard Plant 5' represents begging.

The Big Change steering group is a group of Manchester charities, organisations and voluntary sector agencies that have come together to develop sustainable, long-term solutions to homelessness.

Money donated to the Big Change campaign fund will provide homeless people with the practical items they need to build new lives off the streets. This can include help with furnishing a new flat, purchasing crockery, pots and pans and bed linen, and travel to new accommodation. As people who are coming off the streets need money urgently, there won’t be a lengthy application process and funds can be issued almost immediately by accredited members of homeless organisations.

Host (Thistle Hybrid 2)

Address

Hardman Square, M3 3EB

'Host' by Hilary Jack comprises a number of discreet bronze sculptures of hybrid wild plants that typically grow in forgotten urban spaces. The project aims to promote the work of the Manchester Homelessness Charter, with each piece telling a hidden story behind our development as a city and a community. 'Thistle Hybrid 2' represents employment.

By working together, the business community in the City Centre have made a number of training and work placement pledges to people experiencing homelessness. The Ready for Work programme, delivered by Business in the Community, provides the support and platform to offer real opportunities to people who want to rebuild confidence and grow skills.

Allied London & CityCo spearheaded the employment session which saw pledges from the Heart of Manchester BID, Kier, CBRE, BAM Construction and Wagamama to name a few.

Where offers of placements and training were not available, some businesses have pledged to help in other ways including CV writing skills and job club mentoring. The first sessions are taking place in January 2017.

Host (Buddleia 8)

Address

3 Hardman Street, M3 3EB

'Host' by Hilary Jack comprises a number of discreet bronze sculptures of hybrid wild plants that typically grow in forgotten urban spaces. The project aims to promote the work of the Manchester Homelessness Charter, with each piece telling a hidden story behind our development as a city and a community. 'Buddleia 8' represents the power of the arts and heritage.

“Being that long on the streets you lose your self-esteem and confidence. Doing the classes at the Booth Centre, the writing, the performing, making sculptures, 12 months ago I could not have thought of doing this. I had no confidence whatsoever. Now you can’t shut me up. I’ve found out a lot I didn’t know about myself.” - Danny Collins

Danny’s photographs of his sculpture Mr Streetwise, were designed to show how the general public engage with a statue portraying someone who is rough sleeping, rather than a human being. Danny says “often the most important thing you can do for someone who is rough sleeping is stop and ask if they’re OK, know about the services nearby and have a chat.”

Through initiatives such as The Booth Centre’s Arts Programme and The Mustard Tree’s Freedom Project, people who have experienced homelessness utilise the arts to tell their stories of Manchester and beyond.

The Arts and Heritage action group is increasing opportunities for people with experience of homelessness to engage in the arts, through the city's arts and cultural institutions, artists and industries. Street Support makes it easier for people experiencing homelessness to find services to meet their needs, and also makes it easier for the rest of us to know what we can do to help.

There are over 40 amazing organisations supporting people who are homeless in Manchester – day centres, accommodation, health and substance misuse specialists, services for women and young people, and more. Using Street Support, individuals and organisations can find up to date service information to meet current needs, and also to see gaps and overlaps in service provision.

Manchester is a kind-hearted city, and many people want to help but don’t know what to do for the best. Street Support directs those with the resources and energy to services and individuals, ensuring that genuine needs are met, and reducing wastage.

Street Support also supports the Homelessness Charter, the Big Change campaign, and creates articles and creative assets to inform and inspire more people to get involved.

'Cow Parsley Hybrid 9' represents donations.

One of the best ways to help tackle homelessness in Manchester is to become more familiar with the various local charities in the sector and to support them in their work. Charities rely on donations of all kinds of items, and a great way of seeing who needs what is to use this page on the Street Support website. If you aren’t sure which groups and charities do what, there is also an extensive list of organisations available at streetsupport.net

‬If you are already connected to one of them, why not build on this relationship and collect items together as a household or office team?

The project aims to promote the work of the Manchester Homelessness Charter, with each piece telling a hidden story behind our development as a city and a community. 'Mustard Plant 7' represents volunteering.

Volunteering has many benefits. For some, it is a valuable way of filling time or gaining new skills. For others it is a way of using existing skills for the benefit of the local community. Evidence shows it is also beneficial for our mental well-being. Many people find volunteering a great way to meet people from different walks of life, with whom they might otherwise never connect.

Local homelessness charities often rely heavily on volunteers for a wide variety of tasks, including running night shelters, teaching IT classes, mentoring vulnerable adults, maintaining buildings and offering financial advice.

The Street Support website is the central place online to find out about volunteering opportunities with local homelessness organisations: streetsupport.net. Alternatively you may already know of a specific charity you’d like to give some time to. You can contact them directly or through Street Support.

All guests are referred to the GMWNS via the Booth Centre, after being assessed by their staff in accordance with GM’s criteria, each guest is supported in creating and enacting a move on/support plan to help move them towards a more permanent housing solution.

Whilst the GMWNS primarily uses church buildings, you do not have to be a Christian in order to support them, and they welcome people of all faiths and none. To support their night shelters you can donate or apply to be a volunteer. To find out more visit: gmwns.wordpress.com
