Mark this monumental day with a selection of events and activities in Spinningfields

To celebrate International Women’s Day and recognise the achievements of women around the world, a number of venues will be hosting special events and offers for you to enjoy throughout March.

Those who wander past The Avenue during International Women’s Day and World Book Day will be in for a treat, as the steps have been decorated with a dozen vibrant book covers by influential female authors. From classics such as Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice to modern bestsellers like White Teeth by Zadie Smith, there is something for every book-lover to recognise, with a collection of accompanying book quotes displayed on a screen beside the steps. The Little Library, on Hardman Square, has also been filled with an abundance of books by women authors.

Continuing the theme of female writers, from Sunday 8 March, The Alchemist will be asking you to kick back with some inspirational poetry and their Rupi Kaur-inspired Milk and Honey cocktail.

Meanwhile, on 6 March, 20 Stories are set to host a buffet breakfast and live pannel Q&A with some of the most influential women in Manchester, in collaboration with Elle for Elle. Hear from the businesswomen of today about what qualities they believe make a real leader, the challenges they have faced in their industries and how they would like to make an impact on women’s rights today.

On Sunday 8 March, International Women’s Day itself, The Oast House will be screening a series of girl-power movies in their cosy TeePee. Bring your daughters, nieces, sisters and friends to watch Disney’s iconic Frozen, from 12-2pm. Then, from 5:30-7:30pm, pump up your platforms for Spice World, a movie about one of the biggest girl bands ever.

Alternatively, from 11:30am-1:30pm, take a questioning look at history with the People’s History Museum, who will be uncovering the women who have migrated to Britain and campaigned for equality over the past 200 years. Led by the 2020 Community Programme Team, this free event forms part of a year-long programme exploring migration.

The celebrations do not have to stop there! On 9 March, XYZ Social will be inviting you to join them for a chat, coffee and pastry (email jack@extractcoffee.co.uk to RSVP). In addition to this, they will be giving away a free treat slice to anyone who purchases a ‘Betty Blend’ coffee, produced by a female-only team.

Bill’s will also be honouring this significant day with a special competition, which will allow one lucky winner to secure a beautiful bouquet and a meal for ten friends and family members! Follow @billsmcr on Instagram to find out more.
