Visitors to Spinningfields are able to pick up relevant news and offers on their mobile phones thanks to a new service called OtherWorld.

The trial by Manchester start-up studio Like No Other uses cutting-edge beacon technology to trigger stories as people walk past them. This could be The Oast House telling you it is hosting a free film screening in a few days time, No.1 Spinningfields announcing its latest tenants, or police appeals and breaking news in other popular places in Manchester.

As people walk out of range the stories fall away again. The free service works on most smart devices via Bluetooth and does not require an app to be downloaded.

Other partners for the pilot include Greater Manchester Police, Manchester City Council, NHS, Trinity Mirror, Big Issue, Visit Manchester, Manchester Histories, People’s History Museum and local businesses, charities and arts venues.

The pilot is running exclusively in Manchester until the end of the year and is funded by Google.
